London's Donmar Warehouse has scheduled four productions for its second season under Artistic Director Michael Longhurst. The 2020 lineup will kick off with the first major U.K. production of In the Blood by Pulitzer-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks.
Ellen McDougall will direct the Donmar's staging of In the Blood (April 17-June 6), a striking take on Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic American novel The Scarlet Letter. The production will feature scenic design by Moi Tran and lighting design by Azusa Ono.
Next up at the Donmar will be Steve Waters' The Contingency Plan (June 10-August 1), co-directed by Caroline Steinbeis and Chelsea Walker. The play is set as glaciologist Will Paxton returns from Antarctica to the home of his reclusive parents in Norfolk. He's looking for reconciliation, but he also has news: a flood is coming. The production will feature scenic design by Alex Lowde.
Nina Segal's Assembly (July 12-13), a response to The Contingency Plan, is slated to appear as a Donmar Local Company production directed by Joseph Hancock. The play emphasizes themes of working together to save the environment. It will feature scenic design by Khadija Raza.
Closing out the Donmar season will be Force Majeure (August 7-September 26), a stage take on Ruben Östlund's film, adapted by Tim Price and directed by Longhurst. In the play, Tomas and Ebba are determined to have quality family time with their children, so they head to the Alps on a skiing holiday. But when disaster strikes, their carefully constructed world is turned upside down with hilarious and tragic consequences.
Casting and additional creative team for the Donmar season will be announced at a later date.
