Kevin Chamberlin is going to prom! The multi-talented Broadway veteran has been newly cast as Sheldon Saperstein in the upcoming screen adaptation of the Tony-nominated musical The Prom. Chamberlin will play the role originated on stage by Josh Lamon and originally announced to be played on-screen by Golden Globe winner Awkwafina (as the renamed Ms. Sheldon). It is currently unclear whether Awkwafina remains a part of the project.
Chamberlin earned Tony noms for his turns in Dirty Blonde, Seussical and The Addams Family. His main-stem credits also include Wicked, Disaster!, The Ritz, Triumph of Love, Chicago, Abe Lincoln in Illinois and My Favorite Year. He has been seen on-screen in Jessie, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Modern Family and Grace and Frankie.
Chamberlin will appear alongside the previously announced Jo Ellen Pellman as Emma, Meryl Streep as Dee Dee Allen, James Corden as Barry Glickman, Andrew Rannells as Trent Oliver, Nicole Kidman as Angie, Ariana De Bose as Alyssa Greene and Keegan-Michael Key as Mr. Hawkins. Kerry Washington will also appear in the cast in a role to be determined.
As previously reported, the full Broadway creative team is collaborating on the currently-in-production screen adaptation, including composer Matthew Sklar and co-book writers Bob Martin and lyricist Chad Beguelin, along with director/choreographer Casey Nicholaw. The musical received seven 2019 Tony nominations and was named Broadway.com's 2018 Show of the Year. The film will be released this fall.
