Inheritance & Slave Play Scribes to Be Honored by Human Rights Campaign
The Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest LGBTQ civil rights organization, has announced Matthew Lopez and Jeremy O. Harris as recipients of this year's HRC Equality Award. The playwrights will be honored at the 19th Annual HRC Greater New York Gala on February 1 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel. Lopez is the author of the two-part epic The Inheritance, a retelling of E.M. Forster's Howards End that examines the responsibilities of gay men from one generation to the next. Harris penned Slave Play, which takes a look at interracial relationships in America; the play concluded its extended Broadway-debut run earlier this month. As previously announced, Tony-winning actress Kristin Chenoweth will receive HRC's Ally for Equality Award at the event.
Brian Cox to Direct U.K. Debut of Joshua Sobol's Sinners
Brian Cox, the recent Golden Globe-winning star of Succession who appeared on Broadway earlier this season in The Great Society, will put on his director's cap next month. Cox, who helmed the American premiere of Joshua Sobol's Sinners—The English Professor in 2016, will again direct the play in its first U.K. staging. The production will appear at London's Playground Theatre for a run from February 25 through March 14. Sinners—The English Professor is a love story about Layla (to be played by Nicole Ansari), who is denounced for an affair with her student, Nur (Adam Sina), and is awaiting to be stoned to death for adultery. The production will feature choreography and costume design by Laya Torkaman, music by Veria Amiri and scenic design by Ray Recht.
Maryann Plunkett, Daniel Jenkins, & More to Perform J.M. Barrie's What Every Woman Knows
Gingold Theatrical Group's Project Show program has announced a one-night reading of What Every Woman Knows, a social satire penned by Peter Pan creator J.M. Barrie. Kathy Gail MacGowan will direct the reading, to be held in the Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theater at Symphony Space on February 24 at 7:00pm. Set in England and Scotland during the early 20th century, What Every Woman Knows centers around the perennially unmarried Maggie Wylie and John Shand, an ambitious young student who promises to marry Maggie after five years if her family pays for his education. The cast will be led by Tony winner Maryann Plunkett, Tony nominee Daniel Jenkins, A.J. Shively, Tony Head, Celestine Rae, Mike Smith Rivera, Robbie Simpson and Mirirai Sitole. Susanna Frazer will serve as the narrator.
Donna McKechnie to Play Concert Engagement at The Green Room 42
Legendary star Donna McKechnie, the Tony-winning original Cassie of A Chorus Line, will present her solo musical memoir My Musical Comedy Life for midtown audiences this spring. McKechnie's show will run from March 19-21 at The Green Room 42; each concert will begin at 7:00pm. Based on her print memoir Time Steps: My Musical Comedy Life, the concert will feature McKechnie sharing stories of and re-creating musical numbers from shows like A Chorus Line, Sweet Charity, Follies, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Company and Promises, Promises. McKechnie was most recently seen on stage in the new musical Half Time, which debuted at New Jersey's Paper Mill Playhouse in 2018.
