A strong-minded group of "revolting children" are headed back to the screen. Sony and Netflix are rumored to be developing a movie musical adaptation of the Broadway tuner Matilda, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The new film, which was first in development back in 2015, is expected to receive a theatrical and home video release exclusively in the United Kingdom.
Based on the 2013 Tony-nominated musical (which was adapted from Roald Dahl's children's novel), Matilda is the story of a little girl who dreams of a better life. Armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, she dares to take a stand and change her destiny. Dahl's book received a nonmusical screen adaptation in 1996.
The stage musical Matilda, which features a Tony-winning book by Dennis Kelly and a Tony-nominated score by Tim Minchin, opened on April 11, 2013 at the Shubert Theatre and played 1,554 performances through January 1, 2017. The production featured Tony-nominated direction by Matthew Warchus; a creative team for the movie musical is not yet confirmed.
