The Public Theater has revealed the 2020 season of free Shakespeare in the Park. The beloved outdoor theater program will present Richard II (May 19-June 21) directed by Saheem Ali, followed by a remount its 2017 Public Works musical adaptation of As You Like It (July 14-August 8). The latter features an adaptation by Shaina Taub and Laurie Woolery (who is also the musical's director), with a score by Taub and choreography by Sonya Tayeh.
"There is no issue in the world that can't be helped by a little Shakespeare. This summer, Richard II explores the extraordinary danger and possibility of regime change and As You Like It celebrates a Forest of Arden where all refugees are welcome," said Artistic Director Oskar Eustis. "Laurie Woolery and Saheem Ali make their Shakespeare in the Park directing debuts and these brilliant artists will prove to us, once again, that Shakespeare is the most democratic of dramatists."
The cast of As You Like It will include songwriter Taub (lyricist on the upcoming Devil Wears Prada musical) as Jaques, with Darius de Haas as Duke Senior and Joél Pérez as Touchstone, all reprising their turns from the original Public Works production. Further Shakespeare in the Park casting will be announced soon.
Both productions will be performed at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. For information on ticket distribution, click here.
