Nominations are here for the 36th Annual Helen Hayes Awards, honoring the best in Washington, D.C.-area theater. The 2020 Hayes Awards ceremony will be held at the Anthem on May 18.
Among the Broadway alums filling out the nominees list is Sasson Gabay, the Band's Visit film star who reprised his turn as Tewfiq in the Tony-winning Broadway musical and is now leading the subsequent tour. Gabay was nominated for his performance on the tour stop at the Kennedy Center alongside co-star Pomme Koch for his turn as Itzik.
Broadway alums also nominated for Hayes Awards include two-time Tony nominee Jayne Atkinson (Blithe Spirit) for Ann at Arena Stage and Tony nominee Anthony Chisholm, who reprised his Broadway turn in the Tony-winning revival of Jitney at Arena Stage. Both the Band's Visit and Jitney tours were nominated in the Outstanding Visiting Production category alongside the Tony-winning revival of Hello, Dolly!
Other stars with Broadway cred who earned Hayes noms include John Treacy Egan (My Fair Lady) for his performance in A Comedy of Tenors at Olney Theatre Center and Alison Luff (Waitress) for her turn in Nell Gwynn at Folger Theatre.
Broadway creatives who earned Hayes noms include two-time Tony nominee Denis Jones (Tootsie) for his choreography of A Chorus Line at D.C.'s Signature Theatre and Luis Salgado (On Your Feet!) for choreographing Fame at GALA Hispanic Theatre. Arena Stage Artistic Director Molly Smith (The Velocity of Autumn on Broadway) was nominated for her direction of Arena's Newsies.
