London's Southwark Playhouse has announced the upcoming musical Indecent Proposal, inspired by the novel by Jack Engelhard and widely known for its popular 1993 film adaptation. Charlotte Westenra will direct the world premiere production, set to begin previews on May 29 and open on June 5.
Featuring music by Dylan Schlosberg and book/lyrics by Michael Conley, Indecent Proposal is set in 1988 Atlantic City, where Jonny and Rebecca are very much in love but also very much in debt. He's a struggling singer-songwriter (who spends most of his time playing backup for Annie, a singer at the Oasis Casino Hotel Resort) while she works part-time at the casino and for a local charity. When a wealthy stranger arrives in town and offers Rebecca a million dollars to spend a night with him, the couple considers whether the lure of money will outweigh the promise of fidelity.
Initial casting for the musical includes Norman Bowman (42nd Street) as Jonny and Jacqui Dankworth (Sophisticated Ladies) as Annie. Additional casting will be announced soon.
The screen adaptation of Indecent Proposal was penned by Amy Holden Jones, directed by Adrian Lyne and starred Demi Moore, Woody Harrelson and Robert Redford. Gear up for the musical with a look back at the film's trailer below.
