Rachel Chavkin is taking her talents to the big screen. The celebrated Broadway director, who took home a 2019 Tony Award for directing Hadestown, has booked her first major film project, a remake of the 2014 Spanish psychological thriller Shrew's Nest, according to Deadline. Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski will adapt the original script of Juanfer Andrés and Sofía Cuenca, originally titled Musarañas.
Set in 1950s Spain, Shrew's Nest "follows an agoraphobic woman who raises her younger sister in an apartment locked away from the world. But one day, a reckless young neighbor, Carlos, falls down the stairwell and drags himself to their door."
In addition to her Tony-winning work on Hadestown, Chavkin earned acclaim and an additional Tony nomination for her Broadway debut as director of Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812. Her off-Broadway directing credits include Continuity, Small Mouth Sounds, Preludes, The Hatmaker's Wife, Three Pianos and Obie-winning work on The Royale.
Casting and a release date for Shrew's Nest will be announced soon.
