Aladdin is heading back to the screen yet again. On the heels of a recent hit live-action adaptation of the 1992 animated film, Disney is in the early development stages of producing a movie sequel, according to Deadline.
John Gatins (Flight) and Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton) have signed on to pen the script for the live-action film, with Disney hoping to recruit stars Will Smith, Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott to reprise their performances. No word yet if Guy Ritchie will return as director.
The new sequel will follow two direct-to-video animated Aladdin sequels that were produced following the original film's release. The upcoming live-action sequel, which will be a theatrical release, is expected to feature a plot independent of those films.
Aladdin, of course, was adapted into a 2014 Tony-nominated Broadway musical, which is still going strong at the New Amsterdam Theatre and on tour.
