David Byrne’s American Utopia announced that it will return to Broadway for a 17-week staging next fall and winter. It just completed its run on Broadway on February 16. American Utopia, a theatrical concert that stages David Byrne’s songbook and the same-named 2018 album, opened at the Hudson Theatre on October 4 last year, quickly becoming the surprise hit of the fall. It has consistently sold out the 961-seat Hudson Theatre, recouping its $4 million investment after only 10 weeks and, earlier this month, broke the theater’s box-office record.
The revival engagement will run from September 18, 2020 through January 17, 2021 at the Hudson. The announcement for a revival accompanies the production’s earlier released news that the stage show will be adapted into a film by Oscar winner Spike Lee. “It’s become obvious to us in the band, the crew and the producer team that audiences want, dare I say, need to see this show,” Byrne said in a statement. “They’re not ready to have it disappear just yet. We feel the same way, we love doing this show. So, it’s thrilling to us that we can announce that we’ll be back in September. Tickets are on sale now.”
