Olivier-winning stage-and-screen star Kristin Scott Thomas has signed on to headline a new production of the tragedy Phaedra as part of the new season of London's National Theatre. Simon Stone will direct and adapt the play from the original work of Euripides, Seneca and Racine.
The play tells the story of Phaedra (Thomas), wife of King Theseus of Athens, and her consuming lust for her stepson, Hippolytus. Thomas will be joined on stage by Assaad Bouab (Whatever Lola Wants), with additional casting to come.
Scott is an Olivier winner for her performance in The Seagull, a turn she later repeated on Broadway. She has also received Olivier noms for her performances in Three Sisters, Betrayal, Old Times and Electra. Her screen work includes an Oscar-nominated turn in The English Patient and an Emmy-nominated performance in Fleabag.
The 2020-2021 National season will also include After Life, a new play written by Tony and Olivier winner Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), adapted from the film of the same name by Hirokazu Kore-eda. After Life is set somewhere between life and death, where people passing through are asked to pick one memory that they will live in for eternity.
Rounding out the newly announced National season will be stagings of Small Island, Standing at the Sky's Edge, The Corn Is Green, Blues for an Alabama Sky, Sing Yer Heart Out for the Lads, Kerry Jackson, Outline. Transit. Kudos., The Ocean at the End of the Lane and Beginning.
Production dates and further casting will be announced soon.
