Bette Midler to Introduce Fellow Tony Winner & Politician Star Ben Platt at GLAAD Media Awards
The media advocacy organization GLAAD has announced that Bette Midler will make her first GLAAD Media Awards appearance during the previously announced 31st annual ceremony on March 19. Midler will introduce a performance from fellow stage star and The Politician castmate Ben Platt. In addition to their Politician connection, Midler and Platt both triumphed at the 2017 Tony Awards as Best Leading Actress and Actor in a Musical for their turns in Hello, Dolly! and Dear Evan Hansen, respectively.
James Earl Jones & Lupita Nyong'o Win NAACP Image Awards
Two-time Tony winner James Earl Jones was named among winners of the 2020 NAACP Image Awards this week. Jones took home the prize in the category of Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance (Television or Film) for his voice work as Mufasa in the Lion King film remake. Also of note to theater fans is an NAACP Image Award win for Pulitzer Prize winner Suzan-Lori Parks, who won in the Outstanding Writing in a Motion Picture (Television) category for Native Son. Tony nominee Lupita Nyong'o (Eclipsed) took home an Image Award for her performance in Us.
Michael Cerveris to Toast 15th Anniversary of John Doyle's Sweeney Todd Revival
Tony-winning actor Michael Cerveris has signed on to participate in the 2019-20 season of Classic Conversations, evenings of discussion and performance featuring Classic Stage Company's Tony Award-winning Artistic Director John Doyle. On March 2 at 8:00pm, Cerveris will chat with Doyle about 2005 Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd in which Cerveris played the title role and Doyle served as director. Other upcoming Classic Conversations events with Doyle will include Tony nominees Mary Beth Peil and Barbara Walsh (December 8 at 7:00pm) and Judy Kuhn (May 17 at 7:00pm).
