Tony winner Phylicia Rashad is revisiting a play she starred in 20 years ago. The first photos from Blue by Charles Randolph-Wright, and directed by Rashad, have been released. The play will begin performances at the historic Apollo Theater from April 27, with a May 10 opening night. It is about the Clark family—the richest family in the fictional town of Kent, South Carolina—and the secrets they hold. The play features original music by Nona Hendryx, which is performed on stage by the character of Blue Williams (played by Alan H. Green), whose music the matriarch of the Clarks, Tillie, is obsessed with. Tony and Emmy-winning actor Leslie Uggams plays Tillie and Emmy-winning actor Lynn Whitfield plays Peggy, the straight-talking Clark grandmother. The show is timed to the 100th anniversary of the Harlem Renaissance, and is co-produced by Oscar-winning musician John Legend and producer Mike Jackson. Blue will play a limited engagement until August 16. Take an exclusive look at Whitfield and Uggams in character and check out this new production when it begins performances uptown!
