Renée Elise Goldsberry and Jesse Tyler Ferguson announced the 2024 Tony Award nominations this morning live from Sofitel New York. The Alicia Keys musical Hell’s Kitchen and David Adjmi’s rock-and-roll drama Stereophonic lead the field, with 13 Tony Award nominations each. The Outsiders is next, with 12 nominations, followed by Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club with nine nominations. Among the nominations for Stereophonic—the most-nominated play in Tony history, besting the 12 nominations earned by Jeremy O. Harris' Slave Play in 2020—five were for its actors: Will Brill, Eli Gelb, Juliana Canfield, Sarah Pidgeon and Tom Pecinka. Also in the running for Best Score and Best Orchestrations, Stereophonic stands out as a play with music in categories otherwise comprising musicals.
The Wicked diaspora had a strong showing as well, with former Elphabas Eden Espinosa, Shoshana Bean and Lindsay Mendez each earning nominations. Mendez's Merrily We Roll Along castmates Jonathan Groff and Daniel Radcliffe (a first-time nominee) also earned nods for their performances in Maria Friedman's revival, which earned a total of seven nominations. Four of the five nominees for Best Direction of a Musical (including Friedman) are women, while three of the five nominees for Best Direction of a Play are women.
In a first for the awards, there are seven nominees in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical. The playwright Amy Herzog, meanwhile, is up for two awards: Best Play for Mary Jane and Best Revival of a Play for An Enemy of the People. In the design categories, Tom Scutt picked up two separate nominations for his costume design and scenic design for Cabaret, while the costume designer Dede Ayite earned three nominations, for Appropriate and Jaja’s African Hair Braiding in the Best Costume Design of a Play category and Hell’s Kitchen in the Best Costume Design of a Musical category. The lighting designers Isabella Byrd and Natasha Katz also picked up two nominations each: Byrd for An Enemy of the People and Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club and Katz for Grey House and Hell’s Kitchen.
