The complete cast has been set for the pre-Broadway tryout of Wicked. Now confirmed are Tony Award-winner Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda, Tony Award-nominee Idina Menzel as Elphaba, Two-time Tony Award-winner Robert Morse as The Wizard, Tony Award-winner Carole Shelley as Madame Morrible, Tony Award-nominee Norbert Leo Butz as Fiyero, Michelle Federer as Nessarose, John Horton as Doctor Dillamand and Kirk McDonald as Boq.
Wicked, based on Gregory Maguire's Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, features music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman one of the creative forces behind television's My So-Called Life and Once and Again. Long before Dorothy drops in, two other girls meet in the land of Oz. One, Elphaba, is born with emerald-green skin and is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other, Glinda, is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. Wicked tells the story of a remarkable odyssey in which these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch.
The ensemble of Wicked will feature Ioana Alfonso, Stephanie J. Block, Ben Cameron, Cristy Candler, Mellissa Bell Chait, Marcus Choi, Kristoffer Cusick, Kathy Deitch, Melissa Fahn, Rhett George, Kristen Lee Gorski, Kisha Howard, Manuel Herrera, L.J. Jellison, Sean McCourt, Corrine McFadden, Mark Myars, Jan Neuberger, Walter Winston ONeil, Andrew Palermo, Peter Samuel and Michael Seelbach.
The musical, directed by Joe Mantello and choreographed by Wayne Cilento, is scheduled to tryout at San Francisco's Curran Theatre from May 28 through June 29. Expect it to have its official Broadway bow on October 30 at the Gershwin Theater, though a production spokesperson could not confirm any Gotham venue.
