Nominations for the 2004 Drama Desk Awards were announced at the New York Friars Club on April 29 by Mary-Louise Parker and Tony Roberts. Wicked earned the most nominations with a total of 11, including Outstanding Musical. The ceremony, hosted by Hairspray star Harvey Fierstein, will be held on May 16 at the LaGuardia Concert Hall at Lincoln Center.
Here are some notes on this year's awards:
--Two hits from early in the season--Avenue Q and Golda's Balcony--were ineligible because they were nominated for last year's awards for their off-Broadway runs.
--The Drama Desk committee awarded no Broadway play other than I Am My Own Wife an Outstanding Play nomination. All six Outstanding Play nominees played off-Broadway. I Am My Own Wife transferred to the Lyceum from Playwrights Horizons.
--The critically acclaimed National Theatre production of Tom Stoppard's Jumpers, which recently opened at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, did not pick up any nominations, not even ones for stars Simon Russell Beale and Essie Davis, who received rave reviews.
--Frozen's Swoosie Kurtz, considered by many to be in the running for a Best Actress Tony Award, did not receive a Drama Desk nomination. Instead nominations went to two other possible Best Actresss Tony contenders Eileen Atkins and Phylicia Rashad and three actresses for off-Broadway plays Bug's Shannon Cochran, Intimate Apparel's Viola Davis, Trojan Women's Lizan Mitchell and Sarah, Sarah's J. Smith-Cameron.
--The Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors only received one nomination and that was for leading man Hunter Foster. The production itself did not receive an Outstanding Revival of a Musical nod.
