Matthew Broderick is set to star as the title character in the Roundabout Theatre Company production of The Foreigner, according to the Associated Press.
Broderick most recently appeared on Broadway in The Producers, reprising his Tony-nominated turn as Leo Bloom for a limited engagement earlier this year. He won Tony Awards for his performances in Brighton Beach Memoirs and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. His other Broadway credits include Biloxi Blues, Night Must Fall and Taller Than a Dwarf. Broderick is also well known for his work in Hollywood and can currently be seen on the big screen in the remake of The Stepford Wives.
The Foreigner centers on Charlie Baker Broderick, a socially phobic Englishman marooned at a Georgia fishing lodge with his friend, Froggy LeSueur. To avoid interaction with the other guests, Charlie pretends to be a "foreigner" who doesn't speak English. The locals believe this ruse and thus speak freely in front of Charlie, allowing him to discover things he was never meant to know.
The play had a successful run off-Broadway at the Astor Place Theatre from November 1984 through June 1986. Scott Schwartz directed the farce at the Berkshire Theatre Festival in the summer of 2003 and will reprise his duties off-Broadway.
The Foreigner will begin performances at off-Broadway's Laura Pels Theatre on October 15 in preparation for a November 7 opening.
