Tony Kushner and Jeanine Tesori's Caroline, or Change, which transferred to Broadway in April after a premiere engagement at the Public Theater, will end its run at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre on August 29, according to a production spokesperson. At the time it closes, the tuner will have played 23 previews and 136 regular performances.
Set in Louisiana in 1963, Caroline, or Change centers on Caroline Tonya Pinkins, a black maid who works for a Jewish family. Through her intimate story, the musical aims to portray the painful changing rhythms of a nation.
In addition to Pinkins, the cast of Caroline, or Change includes Reathel Bean, Harrison Chad, Tracy Nicole Chapman, Chuck Cooper, David Costabile, Veanne Cox, Aisha de Haas, Marcus Carl Franklin, Marva Hicks, Capathia Jenkins, Larry Keith, Ramona Keller, Alice Playten, Anika Noni Rose who won a 2004 Tony Award for her supporting performance in the show, Leon G. Thomas III and Chandra Wilson.
The musical, directed by George C. Wolfe, received mixed reviews when it opened at The Public Theater in the fall and at the O'Neill in the spring. In his Broadway.com Review of the show, Eric Grode wrote: "Tesori has a gift for melding straightforward melodies with the more surreal vignettes that she, Kushner and Wolfe employ throughout Caroline. Kushner and Tesori have yet to do right by Noah's parents--Veanne Cox wrestles with some particularly clunky recitatives--and the moon's ethereal arias still feel tangential and abstruse. And nearly all of the conflict is relegated to the last half hour, resulting in an Act I that's long on mood and short on drama. But once Caroline hits its stride, most notably in the scouring final third, it provides a profound blend of head and heart. When all is said and done, Caroline fits in surprisingly well among its fellow new arrivals on Broadway."
