The Roundabout Theatre Company has extended its production of Larry Shue's The Foreigner, starring Matthew Broderick, before previews even begin. The revival, originally scheduled to close on January 2, will now run at the Laura Pels Theatre through January 16.
The Foreigner centers on Charlie Baker, a socially phobic Englishman marooned at a Georgia fishing lodge with his friend, Froggy LeSueur. To avoid interaction with the other guests, Charlie pretends to be a "foreigner" who doesn't speak English. The locals believe this ruse and thus speak freely in front of Charlie, allowing him to discover things he was never meant to know.
In addition to Broderick, the cast includes Frances Sternhagen, Kevin Cahoon, Mary Catherine Garrison, Neal Huff, Byron Jennings and Lee Tergesen.
The Foreigner, directed by Scott Schwartz, is still scheduled to begin performances on October 15 and officially open off-Broadway on November 7.
