The HBO documentary Elaine Strich: At Liberty, which centers on the Tony winning autobiographical stage show, won a Creative Arts Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special. Winners were announced at a ceremony at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on September 12.
In Elaine Stritch at Liberty, Stritch tells it like it is--and was--in the theater and her life. The show, which was constructed by John Lahr and reconstructed by Stritch, took the New York theater scene by storm last season after its premiere at the Public Theater. The show moved from off-Broadway to an acclaimed run at Broadway's Neil Simon Theater, where it received rave reviews and picked up the Best Special Theatrical Event Tony Award. That production, directed by George C. Wolfe, has since played successfully in London and at various locations throughout United States.
The film, which was directed by documentary specialists D.A. Pennebaker, Chris Hegedus and Nick Doob, uses clips from the show, backstage footage and interviews with friends of the legendary performer. Sheila Nevins, Richard Fell, Helen Asquith, Scott Sanders, John Schreiber, John Hoffman, Chris Hunt and Frazer Pennebaker served as producers of the documentary.
