The HBO film adaptation of Tony Kushner's Tony-winning play Angels in America received a total of seven wins on September 19 when the PrimetimeEmmy Awards were announced at the Shrine Exhibition Hall. The miniseries picked up four Creative Arts Emmys which were announced earlier, bringing its tally to eleven.
Angels in America won the award for Outstanding Miniseries. It also received honors for leads Al Pacino and Meryl Streep and supporting players Mary-Louise Parker returning to Broadway this week in Reckless and Jeffrey Wright who also won a Tony for playing the same role in the stage production. Tony Kushner took home the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries, Movie or Dramatic Special and Mike Nichols was honored for his direction. As part of the Creative Arts Emmys, Angels in America received honors for Outstanding Single-Camera Sound Mixing For a Miniseries or a Movie, Outstanding Casting For a Miniseries, Outstanding Art Direction for a Miniseries or Movie and Outstanding Makeup For a Miniseries, Movie or a Special Non-Prosthetic.
Elaine Strich won Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program for her work in the HBO documentary Elaine Strich: At Liberty, which centered on the Tony-winning autobiographical stage show. The documentary previously won a Creative Arts Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special.
