Billy Porter's one-man show, Ghetto Superstar, has been added to the Public Theater lineup. The piece, directed by Brad Rouse, will be presented in February and March.
Ghetto Superstar is a spiritual, sexual, and musical odyssey in which the teachings of the Pentecostal church collide with the gospel according to Dreamgirls. In this production, Porter reveals with song his own take on what it means to be a man.
Porter has appeared on Broadway in Miss Saigon, Five Guys Named Moe, Grease and Smokey Joe's Café. His other theatrical credits include Romance In Hard Times, The Merchant of Venice, House of Lear, Angels in America, Jesus Christ Superstar, Antigone, A Chorus Line, Chicago, Dreamgirls and the pre-Broadway mounting of Little Shop of Horrors. He has performed frequently at the Public's concert space, Joe's Pub where his solo album At The Corner of Broadway & Soul! was recorded live.
Ghetto Superstar is being presented by the Public in association with City Theatre in Porter's native Pittsburgh.
