The October 13 performances of I Am My Own Wife was canceled because Tony-winning star Jefferson Mays is ill, and he does not have an understudy or standby. Performances of the show are expected to resume Thursday, October 14.
Based on a true story, and inspired by interviews conducted by playwright Doug Wright over several years, I Am My Own Wife tells the fascinating tale of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a real-life German transvestite who managed to survive the Nazi onslaught as well as the following, oppressive Communist regime. In the show, Mays plays over 40 characters, including the controversial central figure and the American writer who becomes intrigued by her.
I Am My Own Wife, winner of the 2004 Tony Award for Best Play, is scheduled to end its run at the Lyceum Theatre on October 31 after 26 previews and 365 regular performances. Mays will then star in a tour of the play, beginning at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago on January 8.
