Florence Lacey and Jacquelyn Piro will join Ed Dixon in the Kathie Lee Gifford musical Under the Bridge. The tuner, based on the Natalie Savage Carlson book, The Family Under the Bridge, is set to begin a 12-week limited engagement at the Zipper Theatre on December 1.
Lacey won a Theatre World Award for her performance in the 1978 Broadway revival of Hello, Dolly!. She has also appeared on the Great White Way in The Grand Tour, Evita, Les Miserables, the 1995 revival of Hello, Dolly! and An Evening with Jerry Herman. Her regional theater credits include Follies and One Red Flower.
Piro played both Cosette and Fantine in Les Misérables. She also appeared on Broadway in Miss Saigon. Her off-Broadway credits include Suburb and the Encores! mounting of Sweet Adeline. Her other theatrical credits include national tours of Sunset Boulevard, Big, Miss Saigon and The Secret Garden and the Signature Theatre production of 110 in the Shade which earned her the Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Resident Musical.
Under the Bridge tells the story of Armand Dixon, a hobo in 1953 Paris who must give up his solitary, carefree life when he finds that three children and their working mother Piro have claimed his shelter under the bridge. Armand reluctantly shares his space and throughout his many adventures with the children on the streets of Paris, he discovers his own need to find a "home" and the riches in life that come from family. Lacey plays a gypsy who factors into everyone's lives. The show features a book and lyrics by Gifford and music by David Pomeranz.
In addition to the aforementioned stars, the cast will include Dan Cooney, Alexa Ehrlich, Thursday Farrar, Samantha Grossman, Tamra Hayden, Greg Stone, Maggie Watts and Andrew Blake Zutty.
Under the Bridge, directed by Eric Schaeffer, is set to officially open on January 6.
