Broadway.com has learned that Jeff Goldblum is in talks to play Tupolski, one of the investigating officers in Martin McDonagh's The Pillowman. As we previously reported, Billy Crudup is also in negotiations to appear in the production, which is now aiming for a spring Broadway berth.
Goldblum appeared onstage this summer as Harold Hill in a Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera mounting of The Music Man alongside his wife, 42nd Street alum Catherine Wreford. He has appeared on Broadway in Two Gentleman of Verona, The Moony Shapiro Songbook and served as one of the guest stars for The Play What I Wrote. His off-Broadway credits include City Sugar, Twelfth Night or What You Will and The Exonerated.
Goldblum is best known for his film career, having starred in three of the top twenty grossing films of all time Jurassic Park, Independence Day and The Lost World: Jurassic Park. His long list of feature credits also includes Annie Hall, The Big Chill, Silverado, The Fly, Deep Cover, The Right Stuff, The Player, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Powder, The Tall Guy, Earth Girls are Easy, Nashville, Vibes and Igby Goes Down. He will soon be seen on the big screen in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.
The Pillowman centers on a writer in a totalitarian state who is interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories and their similarities to a number of child-murders that are happening in his town.
Directed by John Crowley, The Pillowman played earlier this year at London's National Theatre and won the 2004 Olivier Award for Best New Play. Oscar winner Jim Broadbent played Tupolski in that mounting.
A production spokesperson had no comment on casting for The Pillowman.
