Mary Poppins topped the 2005 Olivier Awards with nine nominations, which were announced on January 20. The tuner picked up nominations for Best New Musical, three of its actors Laura Michelle Kelly, Gavin Lee and David Haig, director Richard Eyre, choreographers Matthew Bourne and Stephen Mear, lighting designer Howard Harrison and two for Bob Crowley, who designed both the sets and costumes.
Following close behind was the West End mounting of The Producers, which received eight nods. Producers star Nathan Lane, who won a Tony Award for his performance in the tuner on the Great White Way, received a nomination. He will be competing against co-star Lee Evans, Sweeney Todd's Paul Hegarty and Lee.
Though there were several high-profile American performers in London this year, Lane was the only one among them to earn an Olivier nomination. By The Bog of Cats was honored in the Best New Play category, but star Holly Hunter failed to pick up a nomination. Grand Hotel was nominated, but former Tony nominee Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio was not. The Woman in White's Angela Christian and Jill Paice were left off the list, even though other actors from the show were nominated. Many other productions featuring American stars went unnoticed.
Those hoping to see Festen in Gotham will be happy to know that the play, rumored for a Broadway transfer, had a big day. It received five nominations, including Best Play.
The Olivier Awards will be handed out on February 20 at the Hilton, Park Lane.
