Burton had the distinction of earning two 2002 Tony nominations for her work in Hedda Gabler and The Elephant Man. Her other Broadway credits include The Beauty Queen of Leenane, An American Daughter, Company, Jake's Women, Wild Honey and Present Laughter. She was recently featured on the small screen in an episode of Judging Amy and will be seen on the big screen later this year in Stay. She also has a recurring role on the ABC midseason replacement series Gray's Anatomy.
The Constant Wife is a social comedy of marital maneuvers in 1920s upper-class London. Constance Middleton Burton discovers that her husband is having an affair with her best friend. Rather than humiliating herself and others, she denies the affair, defends the two, and sets about turning bad luck, unfaithful friends, local gossip and a broken heart to her own advantage.
The Constant Wife first opened on Broadway in 1926. It has been revived three times. The last revival, a short-lived 1975 staging at the Shubert Theatre, starred Ingrid Bergman as Constance.
This revival will officially open on June 16, making it the first production of the 2005-2006 Tony season. It is a limited engagement scheduled to run through August 7.
