Sweet Charity star Christina Applegate is nursing a broken foot, which will keep her out of the pre-Broadway run of the show at Boston's Colonial Theatre. Standby Charlotte d'Amboise will instead play Charity Hope Valentine during the engagement, with Applegate using the time to recuperate for a hopeful Broadway bow next month.
"Christina's doctors are optimistic that she'll be back in time for the first Broadway preview on April 4," a production spokesperson told Broadway.com.
As previously reported, Applegate injured herself at the top of March 11 performance at Chicago's Cadillac Palace Theatre. In the opening scene, set in Central Park, Charity swings on a lamppost with glee. According to a production spokesperson, at this particular performance, Applegate heard her foot snap during this scene. A few scenes later, after the "Rich Man's Frug" dance number, Applegate determined she could no longer go on and understudy Dylis Croman, who is usually featured in the ensemble, stepped into the leading role.
Standby d'Amboise, who was on stage as Roxie Hart in Broadway's Chicago at the time of the incident, flew out to Chicago on March 12 at the request of producers. Although it was previously thought that d'Amboise would play the final two performances of the Chicago engagement, Croman will instead finish out the run while d'Amboise prepares to headline the Boston run of the show from March 18 to March 27.
Sweet Charity is scheduled to start performances at Broadway's Al Hirschfeld Theatre on April 4, with an opening set for April 21.
