"Drumstruck is very exciting in that it is the first show where everyone in the audience has a drum to play," Lieberman explained. "Drumming brings people together very quickly, bonding the players to a unique rhythm making each person feel a part of the whole symphony. I think New York will be the perfect place for Drumstruck as New Yorkers will quickly identify with the unifying feeling that Drumstruck provides. New York is also a melting pot of different cultures and Drumstruck cuts through racial sex and age barriers to bring people together."
Lieberman, who is also the founder of The Drum Café which launched corporate drumming in South Africa, met up with Kathy-Jo Ross in 2001, and together they developed Drumstruck. Every audience member is provided with an African djembe drum to contribute to the experience of the show. The cast members also drum and dance during Drumstruck.
David Warren Holiday and Summer and Smoke on Broadway will helm the New York mounting of Drumstruck. "David Warren is keeping and even improving the ethnic and authentic feeling to the show," Lieberman said. When you walk into the theater, you will feel like you are entering the deepest parts of Africa."
Drumstruck is expected to be housed at Dodger Stages Stage 2, where Pieces of Ass closes on March 27.
