Lennon the new musical based on the life and songs of John Lennon, has changed its Broadway and pre-Broadway plans, according to a production spokesperson. The tuner is now bypassing its planned Boston engagement, which was scheduled to play the Colonial Theatre from May 31 through June 25. Lennon, which is still in the midst of a tryout at San Francisco's Orpheum Theatre, will begin previews at Broadway's Broadhurst Theatre on June 28 instead of July 7. The opening night date remains set for July 28.
"After an enthusiastic response from theatergoers in San Francisco, we have learned a lot about our show," producer Allan McKeown said in a statement. "We made the decision today to forego our Boston engagement and will instead return to the rehearsal room in New York with our cast and creative team to make the changes that will be beneficial to our show. We look forward to arriving on Broadway with a show that we believe will live up to the legend of John Lennon."
Written and directed by Don Scardino, Lennon features nine actors and 10 musicians. 30 of Lennon's songs are featured in the musical, including "Imagine," "Instant Karma," "Give Peace a Chance," "Working Class Hero," and "Whatever Gets You Through the Night."
