Nominations for the 6th Annual Broadway.com Audience Awards have been revealed. For the first time ever, Broadway.com turned to its readers to choose the best of the Broadway and off-Broadway season in the nomination process. Final voting has now started and will continue through May 25, with winners announced May 27.
Spamalot leads the pack, earning 12 nominations including Favorite New Broadway Musical. Other nods for the popular Monty Python tuner include acting nominations for stars Hank Azaria, Christian Borle, Tim Curry, Sara Ramirez and David Hyde Pierce as well as nominations in several of the special categories that make the Broadway.com Audience Awards unique. Borle and Ramirez were nominated in the Favorite Breakthrough Performance categories, Azaria and Borle were chosen as one of nominators' Favorite Onstage Pairs and Spamalot's "The Song That Goes Like This" and "You Won't Succeed on Broadway" are competing in the brand new category of Favorite New Broadway Song.
Competing against Spamalot as readers' Favorite New Broadway Musical are Dirty Rotten Scoundrels the second most nominated show with nine nods, Little Women, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and The Light in the Piazza. Little Women and Brooklyn performed well with online nominators, earning seven and six nominations, respectively.
Of Broadway's dramas, John Patrick Shanley's Doubt had the strongest showing with five nominations, including Favorite New Broadway Play. Revivals of Glengarry Glen Ross, Steel Magnolias and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? tied with four nominations each.
Brooklyn's Eden Espinosa earned four nominations, making her the most nominated star in the 2005 Broadway.com Audience Awards. The Broadway newcomer has been honored with nods in the categories of Favorite Featured Actress in a Broadway Musical, Favorite Breakthrough Performance Female, Favorite Diva Performance and Favorite Onstage Pair shared with co-star Ramona Keller. Earning three nominations each were Sweet Charity lead Christina Applegate, Norbert Leo Butz of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Spamalot's Borle and Ramirez.
In addition to new productions, the Broadway.com Audience Awards honor long-running shows and the stars that keep them alive after the original companies have departed. Shoshana Bean Wicked Wayne Brady Chicago, Carolee Carmello Mamma Mia!, Harvey Fierstein Fiddler on the Roof, Barrett Foa The Producers, Andrea Martin Fiddler on the Roof, Joey McIntyre Wicked, Brooke Shields Wonderful Town and Jennifer Laura Thompson Wicked have all been nominated in the replacement categories.
