After a two-week voting period, in which more than 144,000 votes were cast online by theatergoers, Broadway.com has announced the winners of the 6th Annual Broadway.com Audience Awards.
John Patrick Shanley's Doubt, now playing at Broadway's Walter Kerr Theatre, came out on top with four awards. Not only did voters find the show to be their Favorite New Broadway Play, it was also the best thing they saw off-Broadway, taking home the Favorite New Off-Broadway Play for its run earlier in the season at Manhattan Theater Club. Stars Cherry Jones and Brían F. O'Byrne also won as the favorite leading actor and actress in a play. Delta Burke Steel Magnolias and Christian Slater The Glass Menagerie were the favorites in the featured play categories.
Of the other musicals, Spamalot also won three awards for two of its talented newcomers--resident diva Sara Ramirez triumphed as both Favorite Featured Actress in a Broadway Musical and Favorite Breakthrough Performance - Female, while Christian Borle took home the honor of Favorite Featured Actor in a Broadway Musical. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee won Favorite New Off-Broadway Musical for its pre-Broadway run at Second Stage Theatre, and its company of nine performers was also honored as Favorite Ensemble Cast.
Sutton Foster, who won three Broadway.com Audience Awards in 2002 for her work in the musical Thoroughly Modern Millie, triumphed in two categories this year. For her performance in the just-closed musical adaptation of Louise May Alcott's Little Women, Foster won in the categories of Favorite Leading Actress in a Broadway Musical and Favorite Diva Performance.
Wicked, which was named Favorite New Broadway Musical in 2004, won three awards in this year's competition. The hit tuner was recognized as audiences' Favorite Long-Running Broadway Show and also won prizes for replacement stars Jennifer Laura Thompson, who finishes her run as Glinda this week, and Joey McIntyre, who played Fiyero for six months last year.
Off-Broadway, Forbidden Broadway currently represented by its latest edition, Forbidden Broadway: SVU was named Favorite Long-Running Off-Broadway Show for the sixth straight year.
