Where is Cher when you need her? Surely she could have put her Farewell Tour on hold it's going on forever anyway, isn't it? and come to the Tony Awards to support her Moonstruck screenwriter John Patrick Shanley. Then at least we would have had some high-fashion drama! In the absence of any Cher-style outlandishness, we did manage to find a few fashion success stories.
Broadway.com's Best Dressed List
1. Christina Applegate in Valentino We loved everything about this champagne-colored confection, from the double-layer handkerchief hem to the ivory and gold embroidery, from the elegant empire waist to the rich beige bows—yes, bows!—that cascaded beautifully down her back. Sure, she lost the Tony, but she looked every inch the winner.
2. Sutton Foster in Michael Kors Her shoulder-length bob was loose and lovely, and the dress—a spaghetti-strapped yellow-and-white floral—completed her sun-kissed summer look. And very few people can pull off yellow.
3. Amy Ryan in Naeem Khan Stella pulled off a dress more suited to Blanche's closet, and pulled it off brilliantly. Ryan looked like a greek goddess in Khan's drapey, paler-than-pale gown, and her gold bangle bracelet was a brilliant touch.
4. Laura Linney in Vera Wang She's been taking fashion risks lately, but this one paid off. Linney rocked the boho chic look in a crinkled-silk blue and gold and gorgeous number.
5. Celia Keenan-Bolger in Angel Sanchez Sanchez is renowned for his romantic designs particularly his wedding gowns, and now we know why: Bolger looked luminous in the chiffon creation; it was sophisticated yet youthful, elegant yet whimsical, and in the perfect shade of paler-than-pale pink.
Bernadette Peters in a black dress is no surprise, but Peters was a knockout in a Donna Karan gown with a sweetheart neckline, a sassy shoulder ruffle and wave upon wave of chiffon ruffles adorning the mermaid-cut skirt.
Proof that Black Is Still Beautiful, Part 2
Mary-Louise Parker in a cocktail-length Armani. Timeless elegance.
No-Fear-of-Color Awards
Victoria Clark wore robin's-egg blue, Leslie Uggams opted for regal purple and Chita Rivera picked "edible pink."
Best Accessory
Brian F. O'Byrne's green socks, peeking out artfully beneath his Armani tux. Did O'Byrne know green is this spring's hottest color, or was he merely swayed by the $3 price tag?
Sharpest Dressed Man
Liev Schreiber in Prada. Handsome men always look good in tuxedos, but they look even better in Prada tuxedos.
Cher Memorial Award
Eric Idle's spray-painted gold suit jacket. The man certainly knows how to stand out in a crowd!
