Based on a French film by Jean Poiret by the same name that was also the inspiration for the 1996 hit film The Birdcage, La Cage aux Folles tells the story of Albin and Georges, two middle-aged partners who run a drag nightclub in St. Tropez. Their outrageously resplendent peace turns to mayhem when their son announces that he is getting married--to the daughter of a local morals crusader. The tuner features a score by Jerry Herman and a book by Harvey Fierstein.
The La Cage revival, directed by Jerry Zaks, opened on Broadway on December 9, 2004 with Gary Beach and Daniel Davis in the starring roles. Davis departed the show in April, and Robert Goulet stepped into the role of Georges on April 15, receiving mostly positive reviews for his performance. As we previously reported, Goulet may take to the road in a possible touring production.
