Broadway.com has learned that Andy Karl, one of the stars of the off-Broadway musical Altar Boyz, has landed the leading role of an ultra-charismatic ladies man in Slut. The off-Broadway musical, which starts performances in September at the American Theatre of Actors, will also feature Harriet D. Foy, David Josefsberg and Kevin Pariseau in addition to previously mentioned players Jenn Colella and Mary Faber.
"It's a very funny and sexy script," Karl told Broadway.com. "After doing penance and prayer with the Altar Boyz, it's gonna be exciting to dive headfirst into some sin, if you know what I mean!"
Karl will play Adam Patterson, a self-proclaimed male slut in modern day Greenwich Village. "He's interested in getting laid and is very truthful about it. He tells girls up front-I'm probably not going to be calling you tomorrow, but I think we should have sex tonight. He may not be the most morally acceptable guy in the world, but he's very honest about who he is." Asked about the comparison between Luke, his Altar Boyz persona, and Adam, Karl says, "Luke wants to save the world, one soul at a time. Adam wants to sleep with the world, one girl at a time!"
Prior to Altar Boyz, Karl appeared in the world premiere tour of Disney's On the Record. Other credits include Saturday Night Fever on Broadway and in the subsequent national tour, Stephen Sondheim's Saturday Night off-Broadway, Me and Mrs. Jones Prince Music Theater, Cats national tour and Romeo and Bernadette, which earned him a Carbonell Award nomination.
Josefsberg, taking on various roles including J-Dogg, is currently starring alongside Karl in the off-Broadway production of Altar Boyz as Abraham. On Broadway, he's appeared as Marius in Les Miserables and Roger in Grease. Other off-Broadway credits include The Joys of Sex, Cam Jansen and Night Blooming Jasmine.
Cast in various Slut roles including Mr. Winterbottom and Doug the local drunk, Pariseau has previously been seen in the off-Broadway musicals I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah! and Cam Jansen. Other credits include Santa in the national tour of Radio City Christmas Spectacular as well as regional mountings of Lend Me a Tenor and The Mystery of Edwin Drood.
Slut centers on Adam, his shy best friend Dan and a pretty rock and roll singer Colella who changes their lives. The tuner features music by Stephen Sislen and book and lyrics by Ben H. Winters.
Directed by Gordon Greenberg, Slut will begin its limited off-Broadway engagement on September 13.
