Tony nominated actors Marin Mazzie and Douglas Sills will headline the one-night-only Actors' Fund of America concert staging of On the Twentieth Century. The benefit, to be held at the New Amsterdam Theatre on September 26, will also feature Brooks Ashmanskas as Owen O'Malley, Brad Oscar as Oliver Webb and Christopher Sieber as Bruce Granit.
With music by Cy Coleman and book and lyrics by Betty Comden & Adolph Green, On the Twentieth Century Based on the plays of Ben Hecht, Charles MacArthur and Bruce Millholland concerns the efforts of a grandiose theatrical impresario, Oscar Jaffe Sills, to persuade glamorous film star--and his former lover--Lily Garland Mazzie to appear in his new stage production. Lily's involvement will guarantee a hit for Jaffe and save him from his creditors as well as resuscitate his floundering artistic reputation. But many obstacles stand in the way of this reunion.
On the Twentieth Century originally opened on Broadway on February 19, 1978 in a production starring John Cullum who won a Tony for his performance as Jaffe and Madeline Kahn. Among its five Tony Awards were wins for Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score. That production ended its run at the St. James Theatre on March 18, 1979.
