Manhattan Theatre Club has added John Patrick Shanley's Defiance to its 2005-2006 season. The play will begin performances at MTC's Stage I space at City Center on February 9, 2006. Doug Hughes, who recently won a Tony for his direction of Shanley's Doubt which also started at Stage I before transferring to Broadway's Walter Kerr Theatre, will helm the production.
Defiance is set on a United States Marine Corps base in North Carolina in 1971. Two officers, one black and one white, are on a collision course over race, women, and the high cost of doing the right thing.
Before Defiance, MTC will present Ariel Dorfman's The Other Side on Stage I. Defiance is scheduled to open off-Broadway on February 28.
