The Woman in White star Maria Friedman is taking a brief medical leave of absence following tomorrow night's performance. Friedman learned today that she must undergo surgery for stage 1 breast cancer on November 3 and is expected to require a few days for recovery before returning to the show, according to a production statement.
"Maria is our star, our friend and the beloved anchor of this company," producer Bob Boyett said in a statement. "We wish her and her family well over the next several weeks and we look forward to welcoming her back for her first Broadway opening night."
Friedman is making her Broadway debut in The Woman in White, having received an Olivier Award nomination for her performance as Marian Halcombe in the London production of the tuner.
The Woman in White began previews on October 28 and is scheduled to officially open on November 17. Friedman will appear in the show tonight and tomorrow night. An understudy will then assume the role of Marian Halcombe until she returns.
