Captain Louie centers on a young boy who feels lonely and without friends in his new neighborhood. Looking for something to cheer himself up on Halloween Night, Louie returns to his old neighborhood in an imaginative journey on the wings of his magical toy, his little red plane. Based on the children's book The Trip, by Ezra Jack Keats, Captain Louie has a book by Anthony Stein and music and lyrics by Schwartz.
The tuner, directed by Meridee Stein, opened at the Little Shubert on October 31 after a run at the York Theatre earlier this year. William Stevenson in his Broadway.com Review wrote: "Tweens who love Wicked are probably too old for Captain Louie, but it's an entertaining, wholesome show for young children, their parents and Stephen Schwartz addicts. With its catchy tunes and positive message about friendship, the musical should appeal to families looking for an alternative to the circus."
