Jaime Camil, who was scheduled to start in Latinologues on November 25, will now join the Broadway show later than expected. He is set to play his first performance on December 6. The new start date means that he will appear in the production, which ends its limited engagement at the Helen Hayes Theatre on December 31, for less than a month. The change was made to accommodate Camil's filming of his starring role in I Love Miami, being released in April 2006.
Camil was expected to appear on Broadway this season in The Mambo Kings, but plans for that production were scrapped after a pre-Broadway mounting in San Francisco. He earned acclaim for his performance as Bernardo in a 2004 Mexican mounting of West Side Story. His small screen credits include the series Mujer de Madera, Diseñador Ambos Sexos and Mi Destino Eres Tu. He has also appeared in the films Delfines, Puños Rosas, Zapata, Siete Dias and 7 días. A platinum recording artist, his solo albums include Una Vez Mas and Para Estar Contigo.
Latinologues, which had played at various locations throughout the country before hitting New York, is a collection of monologues, performed in English, revealing the Latino experience in America. Topics covered include everything from beauty pageants to immigration. The show was created and written by Rick Najera. Camil will join original Broadway cast members Najera, Eugenio Derbez, Rene Lavan and Shirley A. Rumierk in the show, increasing the current cast size to five.
