Playwrights Horizons has extended the limited engagement of its production of Christopher Durang's Miss Witherspoon by two weeks. The mounting, directed by Emily Mann, will now run through January 1.
In Miss Witherspoon, Veronica Kristine Nielsen is a woman who, in life turned her back on religion. So why is she spending eternity in the netherworld with a Hindu spirit guide Mahira Kakkar who calls her Miss Witherspoon? And why is she continually being sent back to earth to live lives she adamantly refuses to lead? Will she open herself up to enlightenment and learn her place in the world?
Miss Witherspoon opened off-Broadway on November 29 after a run at the McCarter Theatre. In his Broadway.com Review, William Stevenson wrote: "While Miss Witherspoon boasts witty observations and a riotous performance by Nielsen, it doesn't always hold together as a play. But fans of Durang and Nielsen may want to check it out anyway."
