Hairspray will soon be welcoming a new actress to go and shake her fanny muscles. Haylie Duff, best known for her television and film work, is set to begin performances as the snotty Amber Von Tussle on July 18. That same day, Aaron Tveit will start performances as fellow nicest kid in town Link Larkin. The Tony Award-winning musical has also confirmed that Lisa Jolley will soon be joining the company.
Though younger sister Hilary is the most famous member of the family, Haylie Duff has been acting professionally since the age of twelve, getting her start with a very brief appearance in the 1997 miniseries True Women. Her small screen credits include recurring roles on Boston Public, her sister's series Lizzie McGuire, Joan of Arcadia and 7th Heaven. She has appeared in the films I Love Your Work and Napoleon Dynamite in which she played the stuck-up Summer Wheatley, a character much like Amber Von Tussle among others. She stars with her sister in the summer movie Material Girls. Both Duff sisters are singer/songwriters. Haylie wrote songs for Hilary's albums and has dueted with Hilary on recordings and in concert. The pair also notably appeared on an Icebreakers commercial together.
Tveit comes to the Broadway company having earned positive notices for his work on the national tour of Hairspray. His other theatrical credits include the non-equity national tour of Rent.
Starting July 4, Jolley will take over for Julie Halston in the roles of Prudy Pingleton, Gym Teacher and Matron. Her New York theatrical credits include The Plank Project, The Dilemma of Drugs, Harriet The Spy, Kings Crossings and The Girl Who Came To Supper. Her fully improvised solo show, Jolley On The Spot, has been performed in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago at the Chicago Improv Festival in 2001 and 2002.
Hairspray currently stars Shannon Durig as Tracy Turnblad, Blake Hammond as Edna Turnblad, Stephen DeRosa as Wilbur Turnblad, Andrew Rannells as Link Larkin, Tevin Campbell as Seaweed J. Stubbs, Becky Gulsvig as Amber Von Tussle, Caissie Levy as Penny Pingleton, Darlene Love as Motormouth Maybelle and Isabel Keating as Velma Von Tussle. Recent cast member Diana DeGarmo, of American Idol fame, will return to the role of Penny Pingleton on September 8.
