Tony-Winning Pajama Game Will Not Return to Broadway This Fall

The Tony Award-winning revival of The Pajama Game, which ended its limited engagement at the American Airlines Theatre last month, will not return to Broadway this fall as was previously announced. Producer Jeffrey Richards told The New York Times that there were no appropriate theaters available to house the production.

Richard Bissell's novel 7 1/2 Cents inspired The Pajama Game, which features music and lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross and a book by George Abbott and Bissell. In the musical comedy, a battle ensues when workers at the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory demand a seven-and-a-half cent raise from their reluctant employers. Matters are complicated when the head of the Union Grievance Committee, Babe Williams, falls in love with one of the company's leaders, Sid.

The Roundabout Theatre Company production of The Pajama Game, directed and choreographed by Kathleen Marshall, opened at the American Airlines on February 23 with Harry Connick, Jr. and Kelli O'Hara in the starring roles. The production received mostly positive reviews, was wildly popular and won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. Its limited engagement ended on June 17.

The show was to feature a new cast upon its return. A tour of the musical, with a new cast, is still planned for next season.
