In a onstage pairing of multiple Emmy winners, Tony Shalhoub will join Patricia Heaton Everybody Loves Raymond in Theresa Rebeck's The Scene at Second Stage. Performances begin on December 12, under the direction of Rebecca Taichman. Opening night off-Broadway has been set for January 11, 2007.
The Scene is a black comedy that takes on New York, the entertainment industry, marriage and even Ohio, centering on three old friends hitting middle age who have their worlds upended by the new hot, young thing. Shalhoub will play Charlie, an unemployed New York actor married to Heaton's character, Stella, a producer of a morning television show. The play received good reviews at the 2006 Humana Festival.
Shalhoub has won three Emmy Awards as OCD-afflicted private detective Adrian Monk in the TV series Monk. He made his Broadway debut in the 1985 Rita Moreno/Sally Struthers production of The Odd Couple and was nominated for a 1992 Tony Award for his featured role in Conversations With My Father. Shalhoub met his wife, actress Brooke Adams, when they co-starred on Broadway in The Heidi Chronicles. His off-Broadway credits include Waiting for Godot, For Dear Life, Rameau's Nephew, Zero Positive and two productions of Shakespeare in Central Park, Henry IV Part I and Richard II His many feature films include The Great New Wonderful, The Last Shot, Spy Kids, Galaxy Quest, The Siege, A Civil Action, Searching for Bobby Fischer, The Impostors, Primary Colors, Big Night, Barton Fink, Honeymoon in Vegas, Longtime Companion, Life or Something Like It and Men in Black.
