David Turner to Replace Christopher Fitzgerald in Gutenberg! The Musical!

David Turner, a star of last season's critically lambasted Broadway musical In My Life, will join the cast of Gutenberg! The Musical! as aspiring composer Bud Davenport on February 13. He replaces Christopher Fitzgerald, who is departing for TV pilot season in Los Angeles, and joins Jeremy Shamos, who plays Doug Simon. The production recently transferred to the Actors' Playhouse under the direction of Alex Timbers.

In this two-man musical spoof, a pair of aspiring playwrights, Bud Davenport and Doug Simon, perform a backers' audition for their new project, a big, splashy musical about printing press inventor Johann Gutenberg. With an unending supply of enthusiasm, Bud and Doug sing all the songs and play all the parts in their crass historical epic, with the hope that one of the producers in attendance will give them a Broadway contract—fulfilling their ill-advised dreams.

Turner, who starred as the angel Winston in In My Life, has just returned from playing Sir Robin in the national tour of Spamalot. He has appeared on Broadway in Tom Stoppard's The Invention of Love. His off-Broadway credits include The Butter and Egg Man, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged and The Last Sunday in June. At Williamstown, he has appeared in Where's Charley?, Camino Real, As You Like It, The Skin of Our Teeth and the title role in The Servant of Two Masters. Turner is a composer/lyricist member of the BMI Musical Theatre Workshop, where he received the Jerry Harrington Award. He is also the writer/director of a short film called The Debut.
