Spring Awakening and The Coast of Utopia topped the list of winners at the 61st annual Tony Awards, presented at Radio City Music Hall on June 10. Spring Awakening won eight awards, including Best Musical, Best Score Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater and Book Sater as well as John Gallagher, Jr.'s featured performance and Michael Mayer's direction. In earning seven Tonys, Tom Stoppard's epic trilogy broke the previous record held by Death of a Salesman and The History Boys, earning seven awards, including Best Play, Best Director Jack O'Brien and two featured performance Tonys Jennifer Ehle and Billy Crudup. With two shows winning 15 of 25 Tonys, the other new plays and musicals had to fight for leftovers. Grey Gardens was the only show that won more than a single award, taking home Tonys for its stars, Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson, and costume designer William Ivey Long. Set designer Bob Crowley had the distinction of being honored for both a play The Coast of Utopia, with Scott Pask and a musical Mary Poppins, the show's only award of the evening.
