Two days after winning the 2007 Tony Award for Best Revival, the producers of Company have announced that the production, directed by John Doyle, will close on July 1. Upon closing, Company will have played 34 previews and 247 regular performances at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. Opening night was November 29, 2006.
Doyle's production of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's 1970 musical continued the director's method of having actors double as the show's orchestra, first seen on Broadway last season in Sweeney Todd. In spite of sweeping the end-of-year prizes for Best Revival, Company had struggled at the box office throughout its Broadway run. In recent weeks, it had played to under 50% of capacity.
Raul Esparza had been expected to win Best Actor in a Musical for his performance as conflicted bachelor Bobby, but the prize went to David Hyde Pierce of Curtains. In addition to Esparza, the Company cast includes Barbara Walsh as Joanne, Keith Buterbaugh as Harry, Matt Castle as Peter, Robert Cunningham as Paul, Angel Desai as Marta, Kelly Jeanne Grant as Kathy, Kristin Huffman as Sarah, Amy Justman as Susan, Heather Laws as Amy, Leenya Rideout as Jenny, Fred Rose as David, Bruce Sabath as Larry and Elizabeth Stanley as April.
