Tom Wopat will star with Faith Prince, Harvey Fierstein and Leslie Kritzer in A Catered Affair, the new Broadway-bound musical with book by Fierstein, score by John Bucchino and directed by John Doyle Company, Sweeney Todd. A Catered Affair will open at a not-yet-announced Jujamcyn theater in Spring 2008. Prior to Broadway, the musical will inaugurate the 2007-08 season at San Diego's Old Globe Theatre, beginning September 20.
Tom Wopat will create the role of father of the bride Tom Hurley in this musical centered on a family wedding in the Bronx in 1953. A Catered Affair reveals relationships strained to their limits when a couple Wopat and Prince must decide whether to spend their life savings on a family business or to launch the marriage of their only daughter Kritzer with a lavish catered affair. Ernest Borgnine played Wopat's role in the 1956 movie written by Gore Vidal from an original teleplay by Paddy Chayefsky.
Wopat received a Tony nomination for his performance in the revival of Annie Get Your Gun and most recently appeared in Broadway in Glengarry Glen Ross, where he shared a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble. Other Broadway credits include 42nd Street, Chicago, Guys and Dolls, City of Angels and I Love My Wife.
