Jersey Boys choreographer Sergio Trujillo has signed on to choreograph Playwrights Horizons' upcoming world-premiere production of the musical Saved. Directed by Gary Griffin The Color Purple and starring Celia Keenan-Bolger The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Les Miserables, the show will begin performances at the company's Mainstage Theater in May 2008. Also joining the creative team of Saved are three Tony Award-winning designers: scenic designer Scott Pask The Coast of Utopia, The Pillowman, costume designer Jess Goldstein The Rivals and lighting designer Donald Holder The Lion King.
Saved features music and lyrics by Obie Award winner Michael Friedman the Civilians, Romeo and Juliet for Shakespeare in the Park and book and lyrics by Olivier Award nominee John Dempsey The Witches of Eastwick and Obie Award winner Rinne Groff The Ruby Sunrise, Weeds. The show is based on the 2004 feature film written by Brian Dannelly and Michael Urban.
Trujillo's other credits include the Broadway production of All Shook Up, the world premieres of Zhivago La Jolla, The Mambo Kings San Francisco, Peggy Sue Got Married London and the recent pre-Broadway tryout of the revival of The Wiz La Jolla; Disney's re-imagined European production of Tarzan; and the off-Broadway productions The Great American Trailer Park Musical, Bare: A Pop Opera and Shakespeare in the Park's recent Romeo and Juliet.
