Casting is complete for Classic Stage Company's forthcoming production of Shakespeare's Richard III, starring Michael Cumpsty. Co-directed by Cumpsty and CSC artistic director Brian Kulick, Richard III will begin previews on November 1 and open on November 13 at the company's off-Broadway theater. The limited engagement, which kicks of CSC's 40th anniversary season, is scheduled to run through December 9.
Joining Cumpsty in the cast of Richard III are Craig Baldwin, Steven Boyer, Philip Goodwin, Chad Hoeppner, Paul Lazar, Roberta Maxwell, KK Moggie, Michael Potts, Maria Tucci and Graham Winton. The production will feature sets by Mark Wendland, lighting by Brian Scott and costumes by Oana Ban-Botez.
Before tackling Shakespeare's ultimate villain, Cumpsty starred in Richard II and Hamlet at CSC, both directed by Kulick. Other Shakespeare credits include the Public Theater's productions of Timon of Athens, All's Well That Ends Well, a previous Hamlet as Laertes, Cymbeline and The Winter's Tale. He recently starred at Leontes in the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of The Winter's Tale at Stratford-Upon-Avon. Cumpsty's Broadway credits include The Constant Wife, Democracy, Copenhagen, Enchanted April, 42nd Street, Electra, 1776, Racing Demon, The Heiress, Translations, La Bête and Artist Descending a Staircase. Off-Broadway credits include The Art of Success and Man and Superman. He will appear later this season on Broadway in the Roundabout's revival of Sondheim's Sunday In the Park With George.
